Chapter 8

The darkness loomed around him. It was filled with an evil so fierce it was almost suffocating, and Shai nearly choked. Fear kept growing in the pit of his stomach. It even started to override and push down the mental and physical effects of being separated from Mel for the moment. He kept his eye on Sean. The man remained oblivious, lost to his ability. Shai was his only protection.

He didn’t need the full extent of his power to realize his new enemy had found him and was closing in to surround them fast. He didn’t know what to expect. If he lowered his mental shields to read for beings he worried he wouldn’t be able to remain standing. It may drain what little energy he had left. The only good thing to come of it would be finally opening himself to Mel and their bond. Standing with his back against the brick wall that a couple nights ago bore bloody graffiti he braced himself and slightly opened his shield. It was if he were just cracking open a window. The presence of evilness was so overwhelming to his empathy it was the only thing Shai could pick up. It seemed as if one large entity was ricocheting off his shields followed by similar smaller ones.

Oh, shit, Shai thought to himself. What if it was the thing that tore through his shields and fried him coming with his mindless freaks? There was no way he could protect himself, let alone Sean, from shit like that. The discomfort from using his powers nearly had him doubled over with pain. Thank God the wall behind was a good, solid support. In truth he didn’t know how he was still standing. All he knew was that the evil was likely to be less than a click away. There was no time for them to even run or conceal themselves. Instinctively he knew they wouldn’t even be able to hide from the powerful force approaching them.

Shai no longer had a choice. His pride be damned. He couldn’t risk being captured or even, worst case scenario, his or Sean’s death. Gritting his teeth and cursing himself for allowing them to end up in this situation, he opened his bond to Mel. The first thing that surged through him was Mel’s pain and sorrow. Underlying that, he took in the man’s anger and fear. But buried deep underneath all the layers of swirling emotions was undeniable and pure love.It didn’t make sense to him how someone could fall in love so fast and hard, but there was no way his empathy was wrong, and there was no way someone could lie about their feelings during his readings. He couldn’t believe the man’s emotions. None of his few romantic involvements ever revealed sensations for him like this before. It was mind-numbing. Guilt flooded and filled him. Tears were burning his eyes, collecting at the corners, nearly ready to shed. Shai would never consciously hurt anyone as he did Melech.
